Trackballs are either solid acrylic with a matte surface or ceramic with a painted surface coated with a gloss lacquer shell. Mechanical mouse balls are just steel ball bearings coated with a thick rubber coating. Most newer trackballs use a single infrared optic to track movement of the ball surface translating it into regular mousemove events.
